The Course
The course is 28 weeks (two 14-week phases) in duration and the timetable is as follows:

Lectures run every Monday and Thursday 7pm-10pm. They will take place either in a Computer Suite, a classroom or in one of the studios.

The aim of this course is to get female candidates to the standard required to access level-4 training such as a Foundation Degree or HND.

The course is divided into two main sections – Music Technology and General Study Skills.

Music Technology
A student applying for a level-4 music technology course should have some previous knowledge of the subject so this section is designed to give you exactly that. It will consist of the following topics:

  • Critical Listening
  • What is Music Production?
  • The Recording Chain
  • The Mixing Desk
  • The Patchbay
  • Multitracking
  • Reason
  • Cubase

  • In addition to lectures there will be supervised and unsupervised studio time.

Studio time can be booked anytime during the following hours:

    Mon – Thurs 9am-10pm Fri 9am-6pm Sat / Sun 10am-8pm

    General Study Skills
Level-4 courses (even practical ones like music technology) involve a fair amount of academic study. Students are frequently required to write essays, conduct research, take written exams and do presentations.

At SSR we have found that many of our existing level-4 students have struggled in these areas. This section of the access course covers a wide range of areas all of which should assist you with your future studies. Full details of the syllabus for this section will be given to you during your first General Study Skills lecture. The topics include:

  • Study skills
  • Reading skills
  • Writing skills
  • Listening skills
  • Numeracy
  • Research skills
  • IT skills
  • Presentation skills
  • Exam technique
  • Reflection and support
