Van Damme Live Event Nights

The events will take place in the Charlie Jones Live Room at SSR, and will take place every two weeks on a Saturday starting at 4pm and finishing around 10pm. Although the events are closed to the general public (unless you are a student or friend or relative of a student), they are designed to run like any real event, requiring a team of technicians and engineers.
If you are a student of SSR and would like to apply to join the Van Damme Event team, you will need to do so at least two weeks in advance of each event. Following are the positions available:
1. Venue/Production Manager
To look after the team and make sure all the rolls are filled and people know what they are doing and are happy. Together with Artist Liaison gather the technical information from the band and set out a realistic schedule for the evening.
To liaise with all other parties and ensure that everything is going to plan and running on time, making sure that everyone has the correct information and resources they require to complete their tasks.
To organise security and hand out working passes and liaise with security staff to ensure nobody is in hte venue that shouldn't be.
To oversee the night and ensire it is running to plan, on time and that everyone is doing his or her job properly.
2. Promoter/Artist Liaison Officer
To book the bands and gather all their technical information so that the Venue/Production Manager can organize his schedule and give the information to the Engineers.
To promote the night to other students and gather information regarding invited guests to create a “guest list” working to a full capacity figure.
To liaise with the bands/artists and ensure they know when and where to turn up and what the schedule of the day is on the night to liaise with the Stage Manager to ensure the night runs to plan and that the bands are happy and have all they need.
3. Stage Manager
To work with Venue Manager and the Artist Liaison Officer to ensure smooth running of all stage times.
To ensure all engineers understand the technical requirements of the artists and the times to which they are to adhere.
To manage the space on stage ensuring that all equipment is placed effectively.
If any equipment is to be moved to aid a change over of artists, to manage this movement, ensuring the original position is marked.
To ensure the stage is safe place to be! For example, Can the edge of the stage be seen when the working lights are off and are there any loose cables that can be tripped over.
To organise all the bands equipment and the sharing thereof, ensuring a safe and swift change over between artists.
To organise the bands empty equipment cases in a safe, neat and tidy fashion, making sure no fire exits are blocked.
4. Front of House Engineer
To mix the sound for the audience according to the wishes of the band and the requirements of the venue.
To be the leader of the technical team as regards technical decisions.
To work closely with the Stage Manager to ensure the scheduled timescale is maintained.
Together with the Monitor Engineer and the Patch/Mic Engineer put together a final channel list taking into consideration the technical requirements of all the bands/artists and making sure all other engineers have a copy and understand it.
Responsible for the house music, which is played before, after and in between the acts.
5. Monitor Engineer
Responsible for the sound on stage.
To organise the on stage mixes according to the requirements of the band.
To liaise with the FOH and Patch/Mic Engineers to ensure a smooth running of the technical side of the event.
To create a “rapour” with the artists and understand their needs regarding stage sound.
To work closely with the FOH Engineer to deliver a sound which is both fitting for artist and correct for the venue.
6. Patch/Mic Engineer
Responsible for the safety of all mics, DI boxes, mic stands, mic leads and mic clips in the venue for that event.
To work with the FOH and Monitor Engineers to establish a working channel list and patch system for the event.
To be responsible for the placement of each mic throughout the whole event in accordance with the FOH engineer.
To be responsible for the correct 'on stage" patching of each channel on the channel list.
To be the trouble-shooter on stage during the whole event.
7. 2 x Recording Engineers
Working as a separate team and with the given channel list and time frame of the event, to record and mix the show “live” in its entirety.
To be self-contained and not hindering proceedings in the venue organise a workable channel list and patch system for the studio.
To be present at line checks so that good connections can be ascertained.
To be present at sound checks so that good signal levels and a mix can be achieved.
8. Security Staff x2
The shows bouncers!
To work with the Venue / Production Manager to ensure there is nobody in the venue that shouldn’t be.
To know and understand the various passes and the access they allow.
To protect the venue it’s staff, the artists and the equipment.
To help the Promoter and Venue Manager stay within the boundaries set out by the capacity of the venue.
To apply for a position on the team please send a short e-mail in application to jaybeard@s-s-r.com and include “Van Damme Live Event Staff” in the subject field. You don’t need any previous experience but this will help especially with the engineering positions.
The successful applicants will form a team and will meet with Jay Beard two weeks before the event to discuss roles and the arrangements for the evening. The students will then have to organize themselves to put on the show and report back to Jay.

The Shows Will Run As Follows
16:00 - All venue staff to arrive for health and safety brief
16:30 – Band loads in and sets up
17:00 – Sound-check main band
18:00 – Acoustic act and DJs arrive
18:30 – Sound-check acoustic act
18:50 – Sound-check DJ
19:00 - Dinner
19:30 - Doors open DJ starts
20:00 – Acoustic act set begins
20:15 – Change over /DJs play
20:30 – Main bands on stage
21:10 – Band off stage/DJs play/ begin pack up
22:00 – Building cleared
We will also need student bands, acoustic artists and DJs to apply to play on the nights.
