Why the Charlie Jones Scholarship?

Introduction by Helen Jones (Charlie's sister)

Let me tell you a little about Charlie, and why it’s so important that we contribute to the continued learning, development and success of the next generation of sound engineers.

Having worked for over 28 years in the ‘sound industry’, which in itself is only 30 years old, Charlie can be safely classified as a true ‘veteran’, who freely gave his heart and soul to sound and music.

His career path as a freelance sound engineer began around 28 years ago when he was offered work at Wigwam Acoustics Ltd, one of the pioneers of what was then a new industry, where he began to learn his trade.

Over the years he became one of the country’s leading sound engineers with an enviable CV. He was highly regarded within the industry touring the globe with some of the world’s biggest stars, and was involved in many prestigious events including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations.

Client’s had the utmost confidence in his technical ability, his capability to stay cool in a crisis, resolve technical issues and provide the quality, organisation, and expertise to make an event highly successful.

In recent years Charlie took great satisfaction in having grossed enough hours on gigs, trucks and behind a mixing desk, where he could confidently mentor young people in the industry though training. It meant a great deal to him to impart his knowledge to secure the next generation of sound engineers.

Sadly, Charlie died on 1st June 2006, aged 50… but that is not to say that his passion, expertise and desire to educate the new kids on the block, cannot live on for many years.

In respect of Charlie’s life, Wigwam will be collaborating with SSR to structure a new course, offer student placements, increase ‘hands on’ opportunities and bring a wealth of knowledge through valuable contacts and manufacturers.

Our common aim is to develop the UK’s most practical and relevant live sound course, producing graduates who have what it takes to be successful in this exciting, dynamic industry.

As a tribute to Charlie; myself, Wigwam and SSR are introducing the ‘Charlie Jones Scholarship’ which will fund free student places, to nurture new, enthusiastic and deserving sound students. Hopefully they, in turn, will make a similar contribution to the industry in years to come as Charlie made in his time.
