SSR & Wigam Acoustics
Developing the next generation of live sound professionals.

SSR have joined forces with Wigwam Acoustics to further the development and prospects of students wishing to work in the field of live sound.

This partnership comes in response to a growing feeling in the industry that existing UK Sound Engineering courses tend to focus on studio engineering and production skills, with minimal attention to professional live sound training.

The field of live sound demands a very specific set of skills, which differ from those relevant to studio sound and production.

Chris Hill, Director of Wigwam, says “The technical expertise required to run major productions requires a wide range of skills. Therefore, the technicians and engineers are required to have diverse technical knowledge and abilities".

"The industry has seen many changes over the past 30 years and it is apparent that new technicians need to be trained in the latest technology as well as the fundamental skills to gain employment".

"The live sound industry is now considered to be a real industry, and properly trained technicians and engineers can enjoy an exciting and well paid lifestyle".

”What is needed is a course which is guided by the needs of the industry itself, with subject areas specfic to the skills needed for a variety of jobs in this field”.

Wigwam is well respected within the industry, offering audio equipment for all aspects of commerce, either for hire, sale or custom installations.

Established in 1978, Wigwam has provided equipment and personnel for high profile artistes and acts including Radiohead (pictured), Coldplay, Madonna and George Michael.

They have also applied their expertise to some of the world's most prestigious events, including the Queens Jubilee event at Buckingham Palace.

SSR & Wigwam are committed to collaborating on a number of projects, including:

> Development of an industry-specific live sound course/modules
> The Charle Jones Scholarship (with Helen Jones)
> Design & installation of a new live venue at SSR
> The Charlie Jones event, a ‘battle-of-the-sound-engineers’, at a well-known Manchester venue
> Regular and ongoing guest lectures and product demos by leading industry professionals and manufacturers
> Regular field-trips to Wigwam Acoustics for SSR students
> A placement programme at Wigwam Acoustics and other leading organisations
> Continuing Development of the WISEAMP (Women In Sound Engineering And Music Production) project
