Saturday 28th January was a big day for SSR as we hosted official AVID Pro Tools 10 introductory workshops at our three campuses in Manchester, London and Jakarta.
All three events were oversubscribed as enthusiasts, industry professionals and current SSR students alike signed up to see the all new features of AVID’s latest incarnation of its Pro Tools software.
SSR tutor and Certified Pro Tools instructor Chris Power delivered the workshop in Manchester, working closely with both SSR and AVID colleagues to produce a highly informative, insightful workshop to around 60 people over two sessions.
Meanwhile at our Camden studios in London, SSR’s Head of Audio Jonathan Espinosa had worked closely with AVID’s Dave Tyler to produce a great demo for the event. Sadly Dave could not make it on the day due to illness (and apologies for any inconvenience caused by this). The London workshop was again well received by a packed house.
Over in Indonesia, SSR Jakarta, who sold out the registrations for the event almost 2 weeks in advance, also put on a great day, welcoming lots of eager students and industry professionals into the studios. The popularity of the event in Jakarta proves the hunger for music and media training that exists in the region, and, as Indonesia’s only official AVID Pro School, SSR Jakarta was delighted to host the event.
Tim Mynett – AVID Training Partner Programme Manager | EMEA:
"Congratulations to SSR on the Avid Pro Tools 10 events that were held at their campuses this January. I know that SSR Manchester, London and Jakarta all had a highly successful days and my thanks go to all at SSR for their hard work especially the SSR Avid Certified Instructors for delivering great presentations. It was a great achievement to have 3 campuses in 2 continents simultaneously showcase the latest Avid products and the Avid Learning Partner Program in such a positive light.
Thanks for all your help and support, here’s to the next event…"
We would like to thank everyone who came to the Pro Tools 10 events and we hope you found it a rewarding and useful experience.
Congratulations to Laura Tolston (London event) and Alex Gregson (Manchester event) who each won a free copy of Pro Tools 10 on the day.
We look forward to hosting similar events in the future, so please keep an eye on the website for further announcements.

As you may know, SSR Jakarta’s Head of Audio, Jason O’Bryan, is a member of British dance music band Dub Pistols. 2011 was a great year for the band and ended with Dub Pistols being crowned as ‘Best of British Live Act’ by Dj Magazine in their end of year awards.
Jason, who joined SSR Jakarta in 2011, has contributed to the bands song writing, production and remixes since 2006 and is still an active member of the group. Working alongside production and Dj partner Barry Ashworth, Dub Pistols are currently working on new alum ‘Worshipping The Dollar’ which is due for release in 2012.
When the DJ Magazine Top 100 DJs poll began in the 1990s, it was pretty much solely UK based DJs that featured. But as it became internationalized in the 1990’s, DJ Magazine decided to create the ‘Best of British’ awards to focus on the best UK talent.
The handpicked nominees and public voted winners in the DJ Magazine list represent the very Best of British in 2011, and we are proud that Jason and the Dub Pistols have been recognised in these awards.
Head of Audio Jason O’Bryan:
"Having spent 15 years of my career as a recording artist with 'Dub Pistols', it was extremely satisfying to see the band finally get the recognition they rightly deserve by being awarded ‘Best of British’ Live Band 2011 by DJ MAGAZINE. Our live shows were always explosive affairs where anything could happen and usually did, and a lot of time and effort went into formatting the shows, bringing in special guests and trying to give the audience value for money at each event. I have had so many incredible experiences touring with the band including touring America numerous times"

In association with the British Arts Council, SSR Jakarta hosted a guest seminar with British visual artists ‘The Light Surgeons’ and Adi Panuntun on 12th December 2011.

From Left to Right: The Light Surgeons (Chris Allen and Tim Cowie) and Adi Panuntun
Christopher Thomas Allen and Tim Cowie from ‘The Light Surgeons’ discussed their working practices and experiences from producing many critically acclaimed audiovisual installations, live performances and animations over the past 15 years, including their focus on incorporating bold graphic design and historical objects into their productions.
Chris and Tim also spoke at length about their ‘Super Everything’ project that was created in Malaysia. ’Super Everything’ is about how the people of Malaysia blend their cultures and rituals into the industrial and modern era of today’s Malaysia.
In addition Adi Panuntun (Creative Head of Sembilan Matahari & IYCE '08 finalist) shared his experience on multimedia performance. Adi’s talk covered the history of Wayang, “a medium which our ancestors used to tell stories using light and shadows”. Adi also discussed his work on making the video mapping for Museum Fatahillah at the Jakarta Creative City project.
This special 3 hour seminar was well attended by people from various backgrounds including art, design, audiovisual and also music.
We would like to thank the British Arts Council, Adi Panuntun and ‘The Light Surgeons’ for bringing such an interesting seminar to SSR Jakarta.

We are pleased to announce that SSR Jakarta, in association with The British Council, will be hosting a special seminar and workshop with the UK’s Christopher Thomas Allen of ‘The Light Surgeons’ and Adi Panuntun on Monday 12 December.
The Light Surgeons operate as a multi-media production company from a base in east London. Their work spans film, motion graphics, print, photography, installations, exhibitions and live performance.
Over the past 15 years they have helped to pioneer many new forms of cross disciplinary practice, from spectacular live cinema performances to bespoke installations using custom software, large scale exhibitions in museums and working with brands along with forging new forms of digital film making.
They have worked with a broad spectrum of commercial clients and cultural institutions on a wide range of projects. They bring their years of experience of being a world leader in the creative industry to each project they undertake and continue to look for new challenges and collaborations.

Also speaking at the event will be Adi Panuntun, a finalist with The British Council’s International Young Creative Entrepreneurs. Adi is the “design-thinker” behind the video mapping project at Museum Fatahillah, Jakarta that went viral earlier this year.
Using film as his medium, Adi believes that design thinking plays a huge role in prompting a new perspective amongst people. He advocates a fun and playful approach to his works because he believes that any problem can only be resolved with fun solutions.

During early November SSR Jakarta held 2 days of open events at our new campus. During the two days we were very proud and excited to see such a great response and level of interest displayed by potential students and industry partners for SSR and our courses.
During the events over 200 people visited us for tours and demonstrations in our brand new facilities and recording studios. This included Pro Tools workshops with our tutor Declan Curtis, Live Sound with Vice Principal Cayo Budiono and Post Production/Film demos with SSR Principal Ian Hu, who along with company MD John Breakell, was visiting from Manchester, UK.
Along with the demos, workshops and presentations, guests were able to find out all about our courses, talk to our support staff and meet some current students to gain a better understanding of what it means to become an SSR student and what we can offer in terms of award winning multi media education.
As is evidenced by the popularity of the open days, many people decided to enrol or register for further information at the events and as a result our courses are filling up quickly.
Our next open event will be in early 2012 (specific date TBC) but if you would like to visit us sooner for a personal tour of facilities or an informal talk about our courses, please contact our counsellor on +62 21 2885 6139 or email info@ssrjakarta.com and we will be happy to assist you.

SSR MD John Breakell and Principal Ian Hu have just returned to SSR’s Manchester UK HQ following a productive visit to SSR’s new campus here in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The main focus of their visit was for John and Ian to see the now completed studios and facilities on offer in Jakarta, meet with some of our new students and conduct meetings with our staff and also our new creative industry partners.
We also held a series of open days to coincide with this special visit (see separate story) and it was great for Ian and John to see the amount of interest and enthusiasm there is from students and prospective students surrounding SSR’s presence in Jakarta.
Following the open events, Ian also met with our new creative partners from the local creative industries.
SSR MD and founder John Breakell:
“It was wonderful to visit SSR Jakarta. The facilities there are looking absolutely incredible and Ian and I were really proud of the huge effort and considerable thought that has gone into the creative process. It was great to see some of our new students enjoying their courses, and of course meeting potential new students and creative partners at the (very busy) open events. We would both like to thank our hosts in Jakarta, particularly Hermanto Murniadi and Danny Murniadi, for looking after us so well and for all their hard work alongside the SSR Jakarta team.”

We are delighted to announce that SSR Jakarta has been awarded official AVID Authorised Training Partner status, making SSR the first AVID ATP in Indonesia.
This development will mean that SSR Jakarta is the only institution in Indonesia providing official Pro Tools certification, providing the full range of AVID Pro Tools certification from 101 to 310 M, P and I levels. This will also include 210V training for Live Sound engineers.
While certified training is a great standard to achieve in any part of the world, it does carry a particular extra weight throughout Asia and we are delighted to have achieved this status for SSR Jakarta.
As a result of this official status, SSR Jakarta will shortly be taking delivery of an AVID ICON D-Control console, which in addition with the already outstanding facilities, will enable SSR to deliver Pro Tools training using the latest industry standard equipment not available anywhere else in the region.
Andrew Hagerman – AVID Training and Education Programme Manager ASIA:
“It’ll be great to have an experienced and dedicated partner like SSR to recommend to people, offering the kind of training that the region desperately needs, and it’s particularly nice to have an ICON facility here. Welcome to Asia!”
Ian Hu – SSR Principal:
“SSR was the first AVID Pro School (now Authorised Training Partner) in Europe and this news represents a perfect synergy as we are now the first to achieve this status in Indonesia. This is great news for SSR and we look forward to training the next generation of Pro Tools users in the region.”

SSR Principal Ian Hu recently visited SSR’s new campus in Jakarta, Indonesia, to view the facilities and finalise plans for the grand opening in September 2011.
During his visit, Ian participated in two successful open events, met the SSR Jakarta team and also undertook some promotional work including an interview on one of Jakarta’s most popular radio stations.
During the open events Ian was on hand to present attendees with information about SSR as a whole and our plans for the Jakarta campus, and also performed demonstrations on Final Cut Pro.
These demonstrations were designed to give people an idea of the type of lessons and subjects that will be covered on our courses, along with answering questions from guests and giving a general idea about the SSR experience.

In addition, Ian was able to meet with SSR Jakarta’s newly appointed Head of Audio Jason O’Bryan. There will be a forthcoming news story welcoming Jason and detailing his illustrious career in audio on the website very shortly, so please check again soon for further details.
Following the open events, Ian, along with Lea Riesjanti and Hermanto Murniadi from SSR, took part in a phone in radio interview on Jakarta radio station RPK. During the phone in, listeners were invited to call or text in with questions about SSR and media education as a whole. The education of the younger generation has been an issue very close to
the heart of SSR from the beginning in Manchester. In the UK, SSR has successfully pioneered several scholarship programmes enabling gifted, yet sometimes socially disadvantaged students the chance to study on SSR’s courses and show the creative industries what they have to offer. Scholarships in the UK have been run in the names of Ian Brown (singer, Stone Roses), Charlie Jones (Live Sound Engineer) and Anthony Wilson (Factory Records/The Hacienda).
With our annual scholarship program at SSR Jakarta we wish to continue these highly beneficial support programmes and will be offering a number of scholarships to students, with the aim to provide unique educational opportunities to the youth of the nation that may otherwise be out of their reach due to social/monetary restrictions.
We are delighted to announce that SSR Jakarta will be offering the following scholarships to our students:
The Alex Kumara Scholarship
Audio Engineering Techniques & Technology

NCFE Accreditation
We have now confirmed that students studying Audio Engineering Techniques & Technology at SSR Jakarta will be able, should they wish, to top up their qualification with official accreditation by the NCFE (Northern Council for Further Education) in the UK.
This is a unique opportunity for students of SSR Jakarta.
This internationally recognised accreditation means that students can opt to have their training recognised as equivalent to an Ordinary Bachelors Degree, bringing UK standards of education and qualification to Indonesian students studying with us.
NCFE accreditation is an optional extra when studying the Audio Engineering course, and will be available to our first intake of students from September 2011. Further details will be announced on the website shortly.
