Saturday 28th January was a big day for SSR as we hosted official AVID Pro Tools 10 introductory workshops at our three campuses in Manchester, London and Jakarta.
All three events were oversubscribed as enthusiasts, industry professionals and current SSR students alike signed up to see the all new features of AVID’s latest incarnation of its Pro Tools software.
SSR tutor and Certified Pro Tools instructor Chris Power delivered the workshop in Manchester, working closely with both SSR and AVID colleagues to produce a highly informative, insightful workshop to around 60 people over two sessions.
Meanwhile at our Camden studios in London, SSR’s Head of Audio Jonathan Espinosa had worked closely with AVID’s Dave Tyler to produce a great demo for the event. Sadly Dave could not make it on the day due to illness (and apologies for any inconvenience caused by this). The London workshop was again well received by a packed house.
Over in Indonesia, SSR Jakarta, who sold out the registrations for the event almost 2 weeks in advance, also put on a great day, welcoming lots of eager students and industry professionals into the studios. The popularity of the event in Jakarta proves the hunger for music and media training that exists in the region, and, as Indonesia’s only official AVID Pro School, SSR Jakarta was delighted to host the event.
Tim Mynett – AVID Training Partner Programme Manager | EMEA:
"Congratulations to SSR on the Avid Pro Tools 10 events that were held at their campuses this January. I know that SSR Manchester, London and Jakarta all had a highly successful days and my thanks go to all at SSR for their hard work especially the SSR Avid Certified Instructors for delivering great presentations. It was a great achievement to have 3 campuses in 2 continents simultaneously showcase the latest Avid products and the Avid Learning Partner Program in such a positive light.
Thanks for all your help and support, here’s to the next event…"
We would like to thank everyone who came to the Pro Tools 10 events and we hope you found it a rewarding and useful experience.
Congratulations to Laura Tolston (London event) and Alex Gregson (Manchester event) who each won a free copy of Pro Tools 10 on the day.
We look forward to hosting similar events in the future, so please keep an eye on the website for further announcements.

‘Somewhere_to’, the national charity organisation supported by Channel 4 and the Arts Council has linked up with SSR.
‘Somewhere’_to has approached companies across the city to pledge physical space to the capital’s young people where they can develop their creative talents and ideas.
SSR was asked to participate by giving access to our studios to bands and artists looking to record their music. We are delighted to be able to do this, as in line with our mission, SSR is committed to making its contribution to the nurturing of talent and music. Through the partnership SSR students will be working with new unsigned acts from the ‘Somewhere_to’ scheme by engineering and producing their music. Being able to access professional recording environments will provide an experience well beyond the reach of many musicians.
This collaboration will also provide a wealth of real world experience for SSR students looking to develop their professional expertise and profile. SSR student Dan Smith is already working with two new musicians thanks to the project.
Wendy Breakell – SSR Head of Education and Student Services:
“This is a fantastic opportunity to support London's creative talent in 2012. Since our beginnings in 1980, SSR's core mission has been to encourage those who have a passion for music and creativity. SSR has a great history of supporting talented individuals so this project gives us a perfect opportunity to make our contribution to the community.”
SSR remains committed to providing the best possible learning platforms for our students and this project allows us to facilitate some of London’s creativity whilst also paving the way for our next generation of producers and engineers.

SSR Audio Engineering student and winner of the first Ian Brown Scholarship Sophie Grant has released her first album.
Sophie produced and engineered the EP at Studio Plateaux.
The album “Swamp Sessions” features tracks from 5 bands who, with shared equipment, passion and drive, got together to record an EP on a secluded island in the Thames. The tracks are a mix of classic punk and grungy sounds reminiscent of the 90’s Sub Pop compilation EPs.
The recording and mix were done over the same weekend. Sophie who was one of the 3 record producers working on the album describes the whole experience:
“We gave the bands each a 2hr block. In the mix I quite simply wanted to produce a great live exciting performance. The whole weekend was fast moving but really fantastic.”
Sophie has been working with some of the artists and bands for a long time and recently one of the bands has been recording here in SSR’s Camden studios.
SSR London Head of Audio Jonathan Espinosa:
“We are really proud of Sophie’s first album; this is a real achievement for her after just 6 months on the course. She approached the whole project in a highly professional manner and her mix allowed the excitement of the live performance to really shine through, not always an easy thing.”

The ICON control room contains widescreen projection and surround sound monitoring which provides the ideal platform for students to learn how to record, edit and mix sound to moving picture.
Avid’s ICON D-Control console will provide an excellent facility for workflows in music and audio post production.
SSR Technical Director Tom Aston:
“It’s brilliant to see the ICON studio completed and ready to go. It’s a state of the art facility and students are already chomping at the bit to use it! I would like to thank everyone involved for helping us complete the project, especially SSR's Nick Barnard, Eric & Mark from Mediaspec and Ian Downs from PMC.”

£10,000 bursary available for talented, enthusiastic music producers and engineers.
SSR, the UK’s leading audio engineering and music production school, is celebrating its opening in London with the launch of the ‘Ian Brown Bursary’.
The scholarship is worth £10,000 which will pay the fees for SSR’s flagship ‘Audio Engineering Techniques and Technology’ course at the London campus in Camden, starting March or September 2011.

Ian Brown:
“It is an honour for me to be supporting SSR London and the next generation of talented producers and engineers being taught there. We are delighted to announce that SSR’s Audio Engineering Techniques & Technology courses in Manchester and London have now been accredited as equivalent to an ordinary bachelors degree. This is a unique opportunity for SSR students.
The SSR Industry Advanced Diploma course Audio Engineering Techniques and Technology course was fully inspected and judged against the most rigorous standards.
This nationally recognised accreditation means that students can opt to have their training recognised as equivalent to an ordinary bachelors degree.
With the impending rise in university tuition fees and difficulty of getting onto University courses, the option of upgrading your SSR qualification to a bachelors degree level will be an attractive and viable option for many students.
The NCFE option will be available from our next intake starting in March 2011, and as stated applies to both Manchester and London SSR courses.
SSR Principal Ian Hu:
“Gaining this recognition gives tremendous added value to SSR’s audio engineering course and we are delighted to be able to offer students the opportunity to gain a formal qualification within our most practical and hands on programme”
For further information on what will be involved please contact SSR Principal Ian Hu on 0161 276 2100.

It is with great delight to confirm that SSR will be taking up residence in one of Camden’s most iconic historic buildings, the Piano Factory.
The distinctive rotunda shaped Piano Factory on Gloucester Crescent in Camden has held a unique place in the musical landscape of London for over a hundred years, most notably as the factory where renowned piano manufacturers Collard & Collard pioneered the techniques of mass piano production.
At SSR we are thrilled to be keeping up the musical tradition of the Piano Factory with a 21st century twist, as we renovate the building with high-end recording studios, green screen filming area and editing suites to be used as educational and commercial facilities.
Taking inspiration from our highly successful Manchester based enterprise, the Piano Factory will combine unique design features and top-end equipment to create some of London’s most advanced recording and post production facilities.
The new facility could not be better placed as we will be surrounded by some of the UK’s best media and production companies which will lead to some great work placement and project opportunities for our students.
SSR Director Wendy breakell
“The Piano Factory is set to become the most exciting and innovative centre for media and music by combining commercial and training within one facility. SSR has always set the standard in choosing bold and interesting buildings in which to house state of the art technology.”
