Working With The Orchids

Well, it’s been a long time coming but October 21st is the release date for the latest album by the Orchids, which I produced and mixed.

It’s taken about 2 years to complete because I had to schedule the recording, mixing and mastering sessions around my busy life at SSR. I’ve worked with the Orchids since their very early days when they were part of the Sarah Records stable (TV documentary and book on Sarah to be released this year). Now our working relationship is very different – they record all of the instrumentation in their home studio in Glasgow and send the songs to me, where I add additional keys and programming and some mix ideas and then send it back. They give me their opinions (quite often 5 different opinions) and then I work towards a final production. It’s a long convoluted process, which culminates in a final recording session at SSR for vocals and then a final mix.

The album is released on the Spanish Acuarela label, and is available on their website, at all decent record shops and from iTunes.

The first single is already out – Hey! Sometimes! – and has a very lovely video to accompany it made by a young local videographer Josh Woods (FeaturePhonicMedia) who studied at University of Bolton and has worked with our very own Jo Hilditch.

So far the single is Single of the week at L’Attimo Fuggente, and Piccadilly Records in Manchester were the first to review the album. (SHAMELESS PLUG - you can also buy a copy there!!)

Jo also had her Music Business students working on the marketing for the album, and SSR tutor Stuart Avery also stepped in to help with mastering the album, so it’s been a thorough SSR effort.

I’d be very interested to know what you all think…

More information on the Orchids can be found at and on their Facebook group. SSR - Working With The Orchids

Working With The Orchids

Ian joined SSR after 20 years’ experience in the music industry. His career started in the nightclubs of Glasgow where he mixed for live acts such as Bronski Beat, John Martyn and BB King. He then built his own recording and video studio in Glasgow, and by the early 90s had recorded with Pet Shop Boys, Texas, Wet Wet Wet, Del Amitri, and The Shamen.

Ian’s own band One Dove released 5 singles (two top 40) and a top 30 album; they appeared on Top of the Pops and toured Europe and America, where they reached the Billboard Top 10 dance charts. He then went on to be a successful producer and remixer, and also recorded albums for Manchester band Lamb.

Ian is still occasionally found in the studio producing and remixing, and in the past 3 years has produced two albums for Glasgow band The Orchids.
