Through our BA Music Production course, let us develop your creative and technical skills in sequencing, sampling, sound processing, composition and arrangement. With you now skilled in Logic, Avid Pro Tools, Ableton Live, and industry leading hardware, you will gain everything you need to write, record, edit, produce, master and promote.
Our 2+1 degree means that those choosing to study first in London, you study the first two years in London and complete your degree in Manchester, giving you the experience of London’s campus and industry links, to then go on and tap into our full resources in Manchester for your final year.
As one of the UK's most respected Avid Pro Tools training facilities across both campuses, we will provide you with opportunities for official training in Avid Pro Tools by certified instructors during your course. So, as well as graduating with a BA (Hons) degree in Music Production, you can also leave us with an industry-recognised certification as an Avid Pro Tools Operator for Music Production.

The course is split into modules over three levels (years):
Year 1 (HE4 modules):
Composition and Arrangement This module aims to highlight the potential of composing with non-traditional musical materials, while exploring electronic music and the role of noise within composition. It will also encourage the development of musical self-representation through original composition.
Study will focus on creative composition and arrangement techniques from various styles, genres and approaches through analysis of practice and practitioners. The module will introduce you to a diverse range of compositional and arrangement techniques which will inform and support your own work.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Present a portfolio of original compositions formed from non-traditional musical materials 2. Present a portfolio of original compositions which evidences specific musical techniques and arrangement skills
Assessment: 2 portfolios of compositions.
Recording Techniques and Technologies In this module you will develop multitrack recordings/editing/mix down with music software and develop knowledge and skills in microphone types and techniques. The module will raise awareness of live and location based recording environments and situations while facilitating practical skills in the recording studio. You will enhance your understanding of hardware and software setups and connections within music production environments, and identify and discuss the techniques used within recording environments and situations.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Employ a range of technologies and techniques in specific recording studio situations. 2. Produce a recording where the location has significant impact on working processes and the sonic characteristics of the material. 3. Make effective decisions regarding microphone types and techniques. 4. Detail the range of processes and techniques employed in studio and location recording environments.
Assessment: 2 recording projects each with a 1000 word report.
Career Focus 1 – Online Profile This module will enable you to understand the key factors in undertaking and presenting information that has been sourced through research, working both independently and within a group. It will ensure that you begin the process of online self-representation and develop effective website design skills to enhance a marketing campaign, while also developing appropriate academic and research skills. The module will highlight the importance of appropriate content development, including audio and video assets.
Study on this module may include marketing strategies, presentation skills, case studies of online creative practice and promotional activities, social networking and online blogging, and the role of the internet for the presentation of an online creative presence
Learning Outcomes: 1. Present a basic marketing campaign aimed at a target audience. 2. Articulate academic research in a written essay. 3. Create a website portfolio for promotional purposes including video and audio content. 4. Maintain an online presence through a blog.
Assessment: An in-class marketing presentation, an essay, and a website portfolio.
Year 2 (HE5 modules):
Recording and Production This module aims to provide the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to facilitate effective recordings while allowing you to employ music production skills. It will encourage and sustain a reflective and evaluative approach, and the use of subject specific technical language while demonstrating the creative potential of the recording studio.
Study on this module may include the appraisal and development of musical materials, studio hardware, recording techniques, mixing desk techniques, DAW plug-ins and outboard effects, music composition and production skills, and basic mastering and editing techniques.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Employ appropriate technical skills in a recording studio environment. 2. Produce a mix using digital and analogue technologies. 3. Use subject specific language when reporting upon their production work.
Assessment: A recording project with a 2000 word report, and 2 mix projects.
Music, Sound, Image In this module you will create an installation event of audio and video materials within a presentation space while exploring themes, aesthetics considerations and technologies with reference to theory and practice within the field. The module aims to highlight and develop compositional technique in sound design work, and explore the potential of programme notes in terms of supporting and promoting work. You will develop a range audio assets to be used when working with film and games.
Study on this module may include theories and aesthetics within the presentation of creative video and sonic art; audience reception of media according to the presentation space and scale of technologies; the installing and rigging of audio / visual hardware and techniques; preparing programme notes; music composition for the mediums of film and games; sound design, Foley, and the creation and organisation of a library of audio assets.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Create an installation through a customised rig using audio and / or video materials. 2. Devise and compile programme notes to support and promote an installation presentation. 3. Create a sound design composition for a film or a game which utilises music, sound effects and recorded Foley sound. 4. Produce an organised catalogue of audio assets used for cinematic / games application.
Assessment: A sound design project and an installation presentation.
Composition and Production This module aims to develop the range of skills necessary to be an effective music producer and to provide the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to facilitate effective remix skills. It will allow you to employ music production and composition skills while supporting the development of a range of specific music production skills.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Work with given musical materials in the role of a producer. 2. Write an original piece of music which demonstrates composition and production skills. 3. Produce an effective remix from provided/selected materials.
Assessment: An original composition and 2 composition projects (producer skills and a remix).
Career Focus 2 – Live Brief This module aims to utilise communication skills to effectively respond to differing scenarios where creative decisions are made. You will develop strategies to create work that meets the need of a commissioning client, and develop skills and theoretical knowledge to deliver work for specific clients. The module will also encourage and sustain a reflective and evaluative approach to creative work.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Communicate effectively with a client or clients. 2. Deliver work suitable for a specific application/client. 3. Evaluate the processes involved in the sourcing of the client, their requirements and the effectiveness of the project.
Assessment: A client-based assignment with appropriate archive, and a viva voce.
Year 3 (HE6 modules):
Composition and Innovation This module aims to synthesise ideas and technique to bring innovation to original work. It will prepare you for an effective presentation/lecture and locate your work in a wider context.
As the module at this level is student centred, its content will be specific to the work of each individual, and musical composition will be guided by individual interests. Study may include analysis of key texts in areas appropriate to your own work and areas of interest, and the development of academic presentation/lecture skills.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Formulate and apply innovative compositional strategies. 2. Create work which evidences a synthesis of ideas in music composition and production. 3. Deliver a presentation which contextualises and evaluates their musical composition.
Assessment: A creative composition project and a presentation/lecture.
Advanced Recording and Production This module aims to consolidate your individual development to this point and facilitate the production of professional standard recordings, while you apply innovative creative strategies in music production and recording.
As the module at this level is student centred, its content will be specific to the work of each individual. Study will be focussed on sustaining the development of recording and post production skills and evaluative technical discussion, and may include pre-production processes, advanced recording techniques, advanced mixing techniques, and mastering.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Create professional standard recordings in line with intended production values utilising substantial microphone captured sound. 2. Mix and master a recording using either software and/or hardware. 3. Compile a written technical report which details your workflow and evaluates your recording(s).
Assessment: A recording project and a 1500 word report.
Career Focus 3 – Professional Preparation This module aims to initiate the development of a body of work in a form appropriate for continuing professional development opportunities within key areas of the industry, or within self-employment or entrepreneurial practice. It will investigate methodologies for specific vocational aspirations through independent study and research, and investigate current business practices, while also appraising the skills necessary to disseminate a contextual report in line with academic conventions.
There is a focus on a wide range of industry careers and opportunities for self-employment, and in order that you are professionally prepared, the module content includes: career possibilities, including entrepreneurship and self-employment; the initiation and testing of methodologies to facilitate vocational goals; appraisal of current business practices and models, including start-up business models; research and development strategies, with particular focus on professional development and employability; and networking and social media to enhance the individual within their professional domain.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Produce a body of work according to a defined career pathway. 2. Evaluate current business practices and methodologies for achieving vocational goals within a specialist field. 3. Research and produce a contextual report that adheres to academic conventions.
Assessment: A personal portfolio of work to be negotiated with your tutor.
Major Project – Music and Multimedia This is a student-centred module. You will be expected to take your work into the public domain by initiating and realising a project of your own devising. This module aims to identify the context for the creation and presentation of a variety of creative work while developing an awareness of the standards required for successful public presentation. You will be expected to manage and administrate the presentation of work within the public domain, and be able to archive practical work and supporting evidence in a form appropriate to the project. Assessment on the module is in the form of a public domain presentation of your work in the context of a student showcase.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Create original work for the public domain in line with their chosen creative practice. 2. Present material for a programme of events in the area of music and multimedia presentation. 3. Identify and apply professional values to all aspects of the production process, presentation and archive.
Assessment: A major project and an archive of the work.
Qualification – BA (Hons) Music Production (Awarding body: University of Central Lancashire). Avid Pro Tools 101 level certification, optional Avid Pro Tools 200 level certification by year three.

Start Date – September 2018
Entry Requirements – A minimum of 96 UCAS points at A2 or equivalent. You should also have achieved Grade C or above in GCSE Maths and English, or an equivalent (UK equivalents include key skills level 3 or functional skills level 2). You will also be invited to an interview, with subject experience and enthusiasm the primary basis on which applicants will be selected. Once your application has been processed you will be sent a letter stating the date you that you are required to attend, and what will be required of you. If it is not possible for you to attend on the date proposed, please contact us to rearrange a date or agree alternative arrangements.
European applicants may not be able to attend an interview in the UK; once your application has been processed, you should submit an e-portfolio, CD or DVD of your recent work by arrangement with us; this will be followed by a telephone interview. If English is not your first language, English at IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent) will be required. Please ask for details.
This course is open to UK and EU students. Applications from International students cannot usually be accepted because SSR does not have a Tier 4 licence. Therefore, if you require sponsorship under Tier 4 (i.e. a Tier 4 international student visa to study in the UK) then unfortunately we will be unable to consider your application for this course.
Contact Hours – Generally, for each 20 credit module you undertake, you will be required to spend 200 studying; these hours will be divided between contact hours (time spent at SSR with staff) and independent study hours. On average, 60-70 hours of contact time is timetabled per module and each module might be split like this:
Associated costs – We will not charge you any additional fees or ask you to pay any additional costs that are mandatory for the completion of your course. In addition to the course fees, there are some further costs which you may incur as a student on this course. These costs are optional and are not mandatory to your studies. These might involve buying for example:
A pair of headphones, something like Sennheiser HD201 (£15-£25), or perhaps if you require something more robust Sennheiser HD25 (around £120)
An external hard drive for backing up your work (a 1TB drive might cost around £40)
USB/flash/pen drives; some submissions will require work to be submitted on these, and while you will have them returned to you eventually this may take some time (buying in bulk will save money and an 8GB might be as little as £2-£3)
Pro Tools 101 certification requires a course book at £23
