Dolby Laboratories at Soho Square kindly hosted SSR students and staff for a field trip at their facilities on the 7th of December 2016. Students from both industry and degree courses got to explore what Dolby’s latest technology has to offer.
"The day started out in their official Dolby Cinema screening room, where we all got to see and hear some clips of movies and pieces of music, experiencing their truly amazing immersive sound - Dolby Atmos.
This technology is truly pioneering in the surround sound field, unlike traditional 5.1 or 7.1 sound it’s not discrete channel based-although it still applies channel based audio beds- however the beds are normally only used for atmospheric sounds, music and dialogs mainly, the rest of the effects and details are being introduced by making them “audio objects”. Also unlike traditional surround speakers are not only placed around you, there are speakers placed on the ceiling called overhead speakers.
After the Dolby Atmos demo we also got to know more about their brand new cinema technology. Dolby Cinema, focusing on Dolby Vision with it’s brilliant laser projection technology
gives you true “black” on the screen and amazing colours. It makes you feel like you are watching something in 3D without the glasses!
Once we left the screening room, we went back to the Ray Dolby Lounge where we were split in to groups and got to go to different locations to check out more exciting things.
One group got to experience their VR unit paired up with Dolby Atmos headphones. The other group went upstairs to their home cinema suite to check out how Dolby Atmos sound home using Dolby Enabled speakers which are not placed on the ceiling they are placed on the top of the other speakers facing the ceiling using reflection to emulate the feel of having speakers on the ceiling. The third group went to the basement to the mixing suite where artist comes in regularly to remix their tunes (make stems and rendering) to be able to play their tracks in Dolby Atmos, placing objects on the fly! These Dolby Atmos events are taking place in Ministry of Sound and it again introduces another exciting innovation in DJing and clubbing.
All the students left the place buzzing, and we would like to say a massive thank you to the London crew at Dolby for their kind hospitality and all the excitement that we been provided with through out the day."
