SSR welcomes heavy metal legend Devin Townsend
Devin Townsend is a Canadian musician and record producer. He was the founder, songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist in extreme metal band Strapping Young Lad from 1994 to 2007 and has had an extensive career as a solo artist.
Devin, accompanied by STS Touring Productions Ltd, used SSR’s Charlie Jones Venue for a pre-production to the Devin Townsend UK Tour. STS provided Devin with touring equipment including a Digico SD8 live mixing console and full backline as well.
SSR student Oliver Twiby assisted with the work flow on the D Show console and also set up the system so it was ready for use when STS arrived. Other SSR students were offered the chance to shadow either Paul at FOH or Oliver who instructed them through a headphone mix.
SSR Student Oliver Twiby:
“It was a great experience for me to act as the SSR in house engineer, it was quite a challenge to patch in both the SSR and bands touring system as well as patching in another active splitter so both boards could be used. It was also really enjoyable to use the Digico SD8 board considering I hadn’t had much experience on it before. I want to personally thank Paul, the band and the rest of the crew for this great and valuable experience.”
STS Touring Productions Director Paul Collis:
“I contacted Jay about using SSR’s Charlie Jones Venue to host Devin’s Pre-Production and he was incredibly supportive as always. I have worked with SSR many times before and was always impressed with the standard of the facilities and maturity of the students. I was very keen to let the students help us out and they definitely gained a lot from the experience.”
