Skunk Anansie field trip
SSR Live Sound students recently went on an exclusive field trip to Skunk Anansie’s gig at the Manchester Academy.
Skunk Anansie are a multi-platinum selling rock band, notable for recording the hits “All I Want” and “Hedonism”.
SSR Students from the Live Sound Engineering course got a chance to have a sneak peak at the band as they prepared for the main event and were allowed to witness the sound check and tour the stage area. The students were addressed by Skunk Anansie’s live sound engineer Paul Ramsey who spoke to them about his history in the industry and the quality of work needed for high profile events.
Paul showcased their vast array of equipment to the students and gave an in-depth analysis of their effect units, Front of House and stage monitor consoles, and discussed what is needed to ensure such events run smoothly. Students were given a tour of the stage area to take notes on microphone placement and the various forms of instruments and equipment used, and were then allowed to watch exclusively as the band sound checked.

SSR student Greg Brown:
“The trip to the academy to see Skunk Anansie was fantastic, it was a real thrill to go backstage and see the band perform their sound check. Paul was incredibly helpful and gave the students some really useful technical tips and insights into his life as live sound engineer.”
“Having students from SSR attend the event was a pleasure; they were very attentive and keen to learn!”
The opportunity for students to go backstage and get some real world experience at an event such as this is one of SSR’s unique traits. The day proved to be a huge success giving the students some priceless experiences.
Students who attended the trip were also treated to guest passes for the main event.
SSR would like to thank Paul Ramsey for taking time out of his busy schedule to give our students this opportunity.
