Jesca Hoop & Elbow's tour manager visits SSR
Following recent sessions with Dutch Uncles, Fenech Soler and The Answering Machine, American singer-songwriter Jesca Hoop was the latest artist to drop into SSR for a recording session.
Jesca hails from Northern California and is widely known for her diverse musical style and affiliations to Tom Waits. She has worked closely with Manchester band Elbow, touring with them in 2008 which later prompted her to move to Manchester on a permanent basis.
Jesca’s session was recorded in our flagship Spirit Studio with SSR graduates Jason Looney and Matt Killerby. Jason and Matt engineered and mixed the session using the knowledge they inherited from the Audio Engineering course at SSR, recording acoustic versions of songs featured on Jesca’s ‘Kismet’ album.
"Jesca was impressed with the studio facilities and wanted to stress how grateful she is to Matt and Jason for all their work on the session, making the day run so smoothly and producing some great recordings. Thanks guys!”
SSR Principal Ian Hu:
“Having Jesca use our facilities really was an exciting prospect and a credit to SSR. The chance for SSR graduates Jason and Matt to work with an artist of Jesca’s calibre was fantastic and will give them some invaluable experience.”
SSR graduate Jason Looney:
“Working with Jesca was a pleasure; she is a very dedicated professional and was impressed by the standard of SSR’s facilities. The session went very smoothly and we made some top notch recordings!”
Following on from the recording session, Jesca’s manager and Elbow’s tour manager Tom Piper also delivered a guest lecture for our Live Sound students, sharing with them the knowledge and skills gained during his career and on the road with one of Britain’s most successful bands. Much like the recent guest lecture from The Stone Roses tour manager Steve Atherton, Tom’s advice was very well received by the students and will aid them in completing their tour managing module.
“It was a pleasure to record Jesca’s session in Spirit Studio and deliver the guest lecture for Jay Beard’s students at SSR. Jay is a great friend from touring the world together over many years and his students are lucky to have such a professional with real world experience as their lecturer. The students were very keen to learn more about the industry and hopefully the advice I shared with them will be of benefit to their future careers. Can’t wait to come back!”
We would like to thank Tom for taking time out of his busy schedule to speak to our students and we look forward to a return visit next term.
