Wigwam Acoustics field trip
SSR Live Sound students recently went on an exclusive field trip to the Wigwam Acoustics warehouse in Heywood.
Wigwam Acoustics are one of the world's leading sound companies for the hire, sales and installation of professional audio equipment. Operating out of a giant warehouse complex in north Manchester, the company provided sound reinforcement for the Pope’s recent visit to the UK, along with countless high profile tours for the likes of Coldplay, Radiohead, The Prodigy and Keane.
Around 20 students from SSR’s Live Sound course and The University of Central Lancashire’s Studio & Live Music Production course got the chance to have a sneak peek inside the warehouse and were given a guided tour by Wigwam staff, some of whom are former SSR students now employed by the company.
During the trip, the students were given an insight into how the company preps PA systems and equipment for a large scale production, including a look inside the hire department, repairs and cable making facilities, FX and microphone stores and the mixing console prep area, where everything is put together and tested before it leaves the warehouse.
Following the tour SSR students were also addressed by Wigwam MD Chris Hill, who spoke to them about his history in the business and the qualities the company look for in potential employees. Rob Priddle, one of Wigwam’s freelance System Technicians also spoke to the students about his recent work in designing the specialist system used for the Pope’s visit to the UK, and the requirements for working with such a high profile figure.
Wigwam Acoustics are SSR’s premier ‘Creative Partner’, having been instrumental in developing our live sound engineering courses along with running the highly successful Charlie Jones Scholarship. Having such strong industry links enables SSR students to take advantage of value added benefits such as this field trip, enabling them to stand out from the pack when applying for jobs and placements.
The field trip was a big hit by the students in attendance and is certain to be of benefit when it comes to their tour preparation and PA system design projects.
SSR Student Dave Lunt:
“The trip was great. It was fascinating to have a look around the Wigwam warehouse and see what goes into prepping for a major tour. I have never seen so many cables! The talks from their staff provided some real insights into life on the road and the details that go into making a large touring production successful.”
Wigwam Acoustics’ Emma Connelly:
“It was a pleasure to show the students around our facility and talk to them about the business and industry which we work in. I am sure they got a lot out of it and hopefully the advice and knowledge our staff shared with them will be of some use to them in the future”
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Wigwam for taking time out of their extremely busy schedules to accommodate our students.
