SSR Manchester - Graham Massey returns to SSR
Graham Massey returns to SSR
SSR recently welcomed 808 State star Graham Massey and “Sisters of Transistors” to our studios for a day of recording in our Spirit studio.

The session is part of the new radio programme titled “Razor Cuts” presented by Pete Mitchell, well known for his work on XFM and Virgin Radio.

Graham Massey is a former SSR student and recorded the seminal ‘Pacific State’ single with 808 State as a student project at Spirit Studios when it was based on Tariff Street in the Northern Quarter of Manchester.

The “Sisters of Transistors” perform their music on vintage keyboards with Graham on drums, creating a unique sound that has seen the band record critically acclaimed albums and singles.

The recordings for “Razor Cuts” took place in our flagship Spirit Studio with SSR graduate Viktor Sigurjónsson. Viktor engineered and mixed the entire session, using his knowledge gained during his audio engineering course and previous “Razor Cuts” session with Dutch Uncles. Pete Mitchell was present throughout the day and recorded an interview after the band had finished performing.

The day proved to be a great success and gave students Tom Leech and Asgeir Einarsson from SSR’s audio engineering course the chance to assist Viktor and participate in an innovative project that will be broadcasted to the public.

Pete Mitchell:
“The opportunity to get Graham and the Sisters of transistors into Spirit was fantastic. Graham has long been a friend of SSR ever since his early days as a student here. They were top professionals and coupled with Viktors engineering we received some excellent recordings.”

Graham Massey:
“It was great to come back to Spirit to record these tracks; it brought back many fond memories and I was also very impressed with the professionalism of the engineering and the Spirit Studio itself. SSR has come a long way since the old days!”

For our students to get the chance to work with Pete, Graham Massey and the Sisters of Transistors is further proof of SSR’s unique industry connections and involvement with some of Manchester’s top professionals. Tracks from the session will be available for streaming on our website shortly.
