SSR announces winner of the Charlie Jones Scholarship 2009
19 year old David Billings from Kent beat over 200 applicants for the prestigious award and was presented with the scholarship by The Lord Mayor of Manchester, along with Wigwam Acoustics MD Chris Hill and Charlie's sister Helen Jones.
David will join the Audio Engineering Techniques and Technology course at SSR, specialising in Live Sound Engineering.
The scholarship award was started at SSR in 2006 to commemorate the lifelong service of one of the UK’s most revered sound engineers; Charlie Jones. Charlie worked in many areas of live sound including Television broadcast and touring and notched up over 30 years in the industry at the top of his profession. The scholarship was started to carry forward Charlie’s ambition to train the next generation of live sound engineers, especially those from challenging backgrounds and those with a passion for live sound but unable to afford professional training.
Upon receiving the award, David said:
“It was such a shock getting the call from Chris Hill at Wigwam, it still hasn’t sunk in yet. I would like to thank Wigwam, Helen and all at SSR for such an amazing opportunity, I won’t let them down.”
Chris Hill, MD of Wigwam Acoustics, said:
“The Charlie Jones scholarship is something very close to my heart and it gives me great pleasure to see young, talented people given the opportunity to shine.”
David’s parents and grandparents were special guests at the ceremony and his father had this to say on seeing him receive the award:
“We are thrilled for David to be given this opportunity, and as parents we are extremely proud of him. We would like to thank everyone involved and say a special good luck to all the tutors who will be teaching him!”
