SSR Students work at DBN
Darren Murray and Ben Dawson studied our academic course Sound Engineering & Design back in 2008, both graduating in the summer of 2011. They are now employed by events company DBN alongside engineering work for the Snowbombing festival and other events.
Both Darren and Ben became friends during the course and after their graduation were both offered the chance to work at DBN lighting Ltd, an event lighting company based in central Manchester. DBN in their own words offer “bespoke, high quality lighting and rigging design and hire/ rental services for the professional live events industry, primarily in the corporate, conference, exhibition, club/ party, rock & roll, outdoor event and theatre sectors.”
This was a fantastic opening for the pair as working for a leading events company offers plenty of opportunities to work on large scale events. The first rig they worked on was the Morrisons conference at Manchester Central. They were involved in rigging and de rigging the breakout areas and the de rigging of one of the main halls.
SSR Vice Principal Ian Carmichael:
“I remember Darren and Ben from when they started in first year, so it’s great to see people join a course and develop friendships, and then all go on to work together in the industry. It’s nice to know that SSR is not only training students, but also bringing people together both professionally and socially.”
In addition to the work at DBN Darren has also been touring with rock band Bentley Park on their UK tour as their Front of House (FOH) sound engineer. The band were so impressed with Darren’s work that he has now been offered the job of FOH engineer on their upcoming European tour. Furthermore Darren will also be a member of the live sound crew at the Snowbombing festival in Austria with Handball UK.
SSR is immensely proud of both Ben & Darren, it brings us great joy to know how our training helps students gain employment in the industry.
