SSR Manchester - Facility Upgrades 2014
Facility Upgrades 2014
Tom Aston - SSR Technical Director:

“At SSR, we have a longstanding commitment to invest in new technology and ensure we provide the most industry relevant education. So, whilst everyone else has been enjoying this lovely summer outside, our technicians have been working hard on their studio tans (read: no tan), upgrading our already world-class facilities.

We’re bringing in some new technology, such as the Avid S6, that had previously not been available in UK education. We’ve invested heavily in replacement computers and infrastructure to ensure the smooth operation of all facilities. We’ve listened to and acted on student feedback by investing in areas that they wanted us to, such as synths, instrument amplifiers and an improved Wi-Fi network.

Our facilities are now better than ever and I can’t wait to see our students put them to good use!"

Here is just some of the work we’ve been up to this summer:

SSR Manchester is proud to be the first and currently only UK educational establishment with an Avid S6. Our expanded 24-channel M40 with Meter Displays has replaced the ICON in our main audio post production suite and will be used by students on our industry and degree programmes, as well as official Pro Tools certification courses.

The S6 is accompanied by customised AKA design furniture and a Sony 1080P cinema projector.

The D-Command from the ICON Suite will shortly replace the DS-00 in the DiGiCo Studio. It will be accompanied by a Genelec 5.1 surround sound system to provide our advanced students with a second surround sound mixing room for project work. Along with the Amek and Avalon channel strips, we will be installing 8-channel Audient ASP880 and Avid PRE mic preamps for recording from the live room.

The versatile DiGiCo DS-00 is an ideal replacement for the DM2000 in the Charlie Jones Studio. Its ability to shine in music recording, broadcast and audio post-production will lend itself to the needs of our intermediate students. Our Live Sound Engineering students will also benefit as the Charlie Jones Studio is the main tracking facility for events taking place in our Charlie Jones Live Venue.

We’ve purchased 21x iMacs for Mac Suite 1, 3x MacBook Pros available for students to sign-out, 3 HP workstations for the Green Room and 2 for the Radio Studio. PC Suite 2 has now been converted to Mac Suite 3 and Ghost Studio 1 is now Mac-based too.

RAM upgrades have also taken place throughout the school on all audio and video workstations.

Cubase 7 has been updated to 7.5 on all workstations. Logic Pro X is now installed in Mac Suite 2, making it now available school-wide. Ableton Live 9 has been upgraded to Live 9 Suite in our DJ Booths and Edit Suites for use with Push. Native Instruments Komplete will be installed in Mac Suite 2 and PC Suite 1 in October, making it available school-wide.

We now have a Doepfer A-100 modular synth, Marshall DSL15C valve guitar amp and an Ampeg BA115 bass amp. Some new microphones, such as Shure SM7B, Beta 52A and 91A, are already in use and we’ve added to our microphone stand, headphone and DI box stock.

We’ve recently installed a new school-wide Wi-Fi network for use by our staff, students and all of their devices. Our previous Wi-Fi network received poor feedback on recent student surveys and so we are delighted to announce this upgrade.

Both DJ Booths now have MacBook Pros, Native Instruments Traktor Scratch and Ableton Live 9 Suite. The Rane Booth also has an Ableton Push, whilst the Allen & Heath has NI F1 and X1 MK2 controllers.

We’ve been busy working on the equipment for our new Stereo 3D Film Production degree and a separate announcement will be made very shortly. Keep checking our website for more information. You can also read an update story on industry support for this course over here.
