Last Saturday, three of our students got the chance to practice their DJ skills on the decks at Sankeys nightclub in Manchester. What was originally planned as a ‘closed door’ session before the club opened turned into a great experience for the students, as due to a mix up with the DJs booked for the main night they got to play the opening set in Sankey’s Spektrum room!
This opportunity arose through our new partnership with the club
, which also sees some of our audio engineering and live sound students shadowing the Sankeys in-house engineers to gain experience of setting up and engineering the sound in a nightclub environment.
SSR students Harry Critchley, Alex Romain and Sarunas Raudonis (pictured) each played a short practice set before the club opened, putting the Funktion One PA system through its paces with a mix of House, Dubstep and Techno. When the manager explained they should continue playing as the club opened, Harry and Sarunas were joined by SSR’s Marketing & Events Manager and DJ Matt Talbot on the decks to warm up the crowd with a b2b set for around an hour and a half in the Spektrum room before handing over to the main DJs on the night.
This was a great experience for the students and demonstrated one of the first tips of DJing – always be prepared! We’d like to say well done to Harry and Sarunas for stepping up last-minute and performing a great set and getting everyone dancing as the room filled up.Audio Engineering Techniques & Technology
student Matthew Dickens was also at Sankeys on the night, assisting the clubs’ in-house engineers with setup and sound engineering duties.
We’ll be arranging a similar experience at the club very soon and look forward to giving more of our DJ and music production students the chance to play in a leading nightclub.
Thank you to all the team at Sankeys for laying on this opportunity! We can’t wait for the next one…
