Earlier this summer we were delighted to welcome long-time friend and associate of SSR Andy Popplewell and brother Phil into our Live Venue with their T.R.A.S.E project.

Andy is a true gent and has for many years been expertly servicing our tape machines and various pieces of other hardware from the Advanced Media Restoration workshop in Hyde, keeping them in working order and sourcing spare parts where required. He has also delivered lectures on repairs and soldering for our students over the years which are always well received.

What Andy doesn't know about audio electronics and tape machines isn't worth knowing, and we were more than happy to accommodate his request for some rehearsal/pre production time at SSR with T.R.A.S.E ahead of their appearance at this year's Festival No. 6 in Portmeirion.

Now here's a little history...

T.R.A.S.E (Tape Recorder And Synthesizer Ensemble) is the name Andy gave to the synth pop project/album he recorded as a teenager with self-made synth, audio mixer and electronic percussion units between 1981-83 in Didsbury, Manchester, producing a single cassette copy of the recordings that would lie dormant for the best part of 30 years.

A chance meeting with Andy Votel many, many years later led to the albums release on Votel's Finders Keepers label, which eventually led to T.R.A.S.E. being invited to perform at Festival No. 6 this summer.

Click here to read a brilliant interview Andy gave to The Quietus that explains the album and history in much more detail. It's a great read so get a brew on!

The rehearsals at SSR saw Andy and Phil bring their live setup into our venue where they worked with a number of our Live Sound students and got ready for their festival performance. The rehearsals and show itself were by all accounts a great success and we are happy to have helped T.R.A.S.E bring their show to fruition.

If you want to catch T.R.A.S.E live yourself, they're playing at Islington Mill in Manchester on 20th October supporting The Space Lady. Tickets here.
