We recently had the pleasure and honour of welcoming Ben UFO (Ben Thomson) to our studios in Camden, London to share his knowledge and experiences with our Electronic Music and DJ Practice BA (Hons) students.
Being one of contemporary dance music’s bold selectors, responsible for some of the most varied and ground-breaking releases of recent years, Ben UFO’s guest lecture opened up a strong glimpse into his own particular approach to DJing, crate digging, the dance music industry and doing things for yourself through a fantastic 2 hour session with our students.
From his beginnings of early dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass, Thomson’s roots lie in UK rave culture, but has cast his creativity wide through house, techno and other global dancefloor sounds. Thomson’s developments as a DJ have been inseparably linked to Hessle Audio, the label he co-founded in 2007 alongside Pearson Sound and Pangaea.
All students were welcomed to this fine lecture and it goes without saying that we had a full house. This was an excellent event and academically highly beneficial - especially to our Electronic Music and DJ Practice BA (Hons) students
Organised by London course leader, Jake Williams
, whose own background is such that his tutoring alone can only lead to a successful outcome, we non-the-less asked him what benefits guest lectures like this bring to SSR and our Electronic Music and DJ Practice degree students:Jake Williams - Electronic Music Production & DJ Tutor:“Guest lectures are key to what we do here – as much as all of us tutors are industry active and have our own particular skill sets, you can’t beat hearing about the different creative processes and/or working lives of people who are center of their various fields - whether that be dance music, art practice or someone from the industry side.”
We have had many guest lectures, from Maria Chavez
to Seamus Haji
and Ben UFO adds to the list of highly relevant practicing artists who choose to talk first hand and inspire SSR students and staff, and long may these continue. With more planned in the pipeline, it’s a case of watch this space.
