SSR are delighted to announce our brand new one year sponsorship of Manchester Girl Geeks, a not-for-profit group which organises networking events, talks and hand-on workshops for women and girls with an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. (STEM).
Manchester Girl Geeks initially started as part of the Girl Geek Dinners movement, which currently operates in over 20 countries and supports more than 60 groups. In Manchester, they run roughly one Girl Geek Tea Party event per month, from workshops, talks and museum visits to hands-on activities and tours, as well as a monthly social. All MGG events provide a great opportunity for women working in STEM to network in a relaxed environment with like-minded-people, learn new skills and have fun.
This sponsorship is part of SSR’s ongoing commitment to excellent education and the promotion of quality teaching in science and creative subjects and we look forward to taking part in a very active relationship. Adrian Greensides, Head of Marketing for SSR explains:“Manchester Girl Geeks goes from strength to strength. As an excellent provider of high quality science and creative based education, offering a range of subjects and qualifications in music film and games, from undergraduate degrees to short course certificates, SSR are very proud to support the great work of Manchester Girl Geeks and look forward to working with them to provide and support a number of events and workshops." Manchester Girl Geeks current chair Katie Steckles:"We look forward to working with our sponsors for 2016/17, and we're very pleased to have SSR on board. Their support will allow us to run a variety of events over the next year, and to bring opportunities for people to get into science and technology, meet others with similar interests, and expand their horizons with new skills and learning. We're also very excited about collaborating with SSR to run some events and workshops during the year and make use of their amazing team and facilities."
As consumers, it seems that music, film and games are simply creative - when in fact science plays a major part in our creative lives. Women play a major part in the development of all three, and we hope our sponsorship helps to promote this more.
Established for over 30 years, SSR have seen the industry grow, launched firsts, watched technologies evolve, shaped creative education and equipped our students with the right help and tools for exciting new futures. With the majority of our academic subjects offering BSc (Hons), we hope that we can play our part in encouraging all generations of women in STEM subjects can lead to highly creative and enjoyable careers.
SSR are proud supporters of Manchester Girl Geeks for 2016-2017, and will be running a number of events and workshops. Look out for more details.
Our first involvement will be to support the Manchester Girl Geeks BarCamp (#bracamp) on Saturday 9 July 2016, an event that has previously attracted over 400 attendees, for a whole day of playing, talking and of course, listening.
