SSR Manchester - SSR Manchester Facilities Upgrades, 2017
SSR Manchester Facilities Upgrades, 2017
Every summer we upgrade our facilities as part of our long standing commitment to invest in the latest and most industry relevant technology for our students. We liaise with the industry, speak to our course leaders and tutors and gather valuable student feedback throughout the year to create our upgrade plan.

This summer, we’ve invested in new equipment to teach the latest technology used in the industry and also replace equipment coming to the end of its life; ensuring high levels of reliability and student satisfaction. We’ve also redecorated and replaced furniture throughout much of our building.

The following upgrades were completed for the start of the new academic year:

Redecoration

We’ve redecorated much of SSR over the summer months, including the reception, Green Room, all corridors, lobbies and toilets. Some of our studios and suites have seen a lick of paint too, including C|24 Studio, C|24/ICON Live Room, Audient Live Room, Allen & Heath Booth, Pioneer Booth and Edit Suite 2.

Green Room

Along with redecorating the Green Room, we’ve purchased new tables, chairs and benches, and have increased its seating capacity.

We’ve also installed 2x Ableton Push on the iMac workstations.

Student President’s Office

We’ve created a dedicated Student President’s Office on floor 2 for Ashley Brooks, our newly appointed Student President, and his deputy. Ashley will carry out a range of functions for our students, including representing students both individually and collectively, providing support on a range of academic issues and organising social activities.

S3 Suite

We’re delighted to announce our brand new S3 Suite. Our S3 suite is focussed around an Avid S3 control surface, Pro Tools | Dock and Apple iPad running Pro Tools | Control, and was designed primarily with electronic music production in mind.

The studio, built by Studio People, has already been receiving excellent feedback by our students, tutors and industry guests. Available in the studio is:

  • Genelec stereo and 5.1 surround sound monitoring
  • Pro Tools HD Native
  • Native Instruments Maschine, Maschine Jam, Ableton Push 2
  • Roland Juno 106, JD-800, JP-8000 and MKS-70 synthesizers
  • Akai S5000 sampler
  • Yamaha electronic drum kit for inputting drum patterns via MIDI
  • Technics 1210 turntable and Rane mixer for recording samples from vinyl
  • Outboard equipment including Lexicon reverb, Joe Meek compression and Focusrite mic preamps
  • 61-key MIDI Keyboard
More information on our new S3 Suite can be found here.

  • XFER Serum (all studios, Edit Suites, Green Room iMacs, Macbook packs and tutor workstations in Mac Suites 1, 3 and 4).

  • Waves Abbey Road Collection (Advanced Studios and tutor workstations in Mac Suites 1, 3 and 4)
  • Vocalign Pro (Advanced Studios)
  • iZotope Ozone Advanced 7 (Advanced studios and tutor workstations in Mac Suites 1, 3 & 4)

New film software
  • Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve Studio 14 (Finishing Suite, PC Suite 1 Tutor)
  • Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 14 (PC Suite 1 & 2, Green Room PCs)
  • Blackmagic Fusion 9 Studio (Finishing Suite)
  • Blackmagic Fusion 9 (PC Suite 1, Green Room PCs)

  • Behaviour Designer (PC Suite 2, Finishing Suite)
  • Marmoset Toolbag 3 upgrade (PC Suite 2, Finishing Suite)
  • FMOD (many workstations: see software list for info)

Pioneer Booth

  • The Pioneer DJM-900NXS2 mixer from the DJ trolley has been moved into the Pioneer Booth now that it is compatible with Traktor and Serato
  • We’ve also installed 3 brand new CDJ-2000NXS2 multi-players, replacing the 2x CDJ-2000NXS. A third CDJ in one of our booths was requested by students in our recent facilities survey

Allen & Heath Booth
  • A brand new Allen & Heath Xone:92 mixer has been installed
  • The two CDJ-2000NXS multi-players from the Pioneer Booth are now installed in the Allen & Heath Booth, replacing the XDJ-1000 units
  • The Ableton Push from the Pioneer Booth has been moved into this DJ booth, due to the third CDJ taking up the available space
  • * As of October 19th, we converted the mixer phono inputs to line level inputs and connected the Native Instruments Audio 10 interface to these inputs.  This allows all three turntables to be used with Traktor (phono inputs 2-4).  Phono channel 1 can be used to monitor audio from the Macbook Pro.  The CDJs are now connected directly to line inputs 2 & 3.  The CDJs can still be used with Traktor but via HID control rather than using timecode CDs

Edit Suite 1
  • Equipment in Edit Suite 1 now includes a Native Instruments Maschine, Maschine Jam, Avid Artist Mix and Nord Lead

Edit Suite 2

  • Edit Suite 2 now has the same custom furniture as Edit Suite 1
  • Ableton Push 2, Native Instruments Maschine Jam, Avid Artist Mix and Access Virus have been installed
  • We’ve also installed a DJ setup around the pillar using the same custom DJ furniture as found in our DJ Booths. The primary purpose of the DJ setup is to allow classes to be split into four smaller groups, using the two main DJ booths, the DJ Trolley and now this facility, for more hands-on time. Students who don’t get access to our Allen & Heath and Pioneer Booths now have access to a DJ setup

Finishing Suite
  • New software includes: Behaviour Designer, Marmoset Toolbag 3, ZBrush
  • Intuos Pro Wacom tablet available to sign out from reception

Film Studio
  • We’ve given the green screen a new coat of chroma key green paint
  • We’ve replaced the Blackmagic URSA mini camera with a faulty mic preamp
  • Replacement truss cable for the jib so that the extension kit can be used at full length

C|24 Studio

  • New acoustic treatment has been installed following its redecoration
  • An SSD hard drive has been installed in the Mac Pro to increase performance
  • We also replaced the blue class chairs with the black and chrome chairs found in many of our other studios

Audient Studio

  • Yamaha HS7 active monitors are now used as nearfield monitors. We’ve installed a power distribution unit in the racks so that all monitors can be turned on and off with a single switch
  • An SSD hard drive has been installed in the Mac Pro to increase performance
  • Any damaged acoustic tiles in the Audient Studio Live Room have been replaced following its redecoration
  • A new drum mat is located in the Audient Live Room

Spirit Studio
  • We’ve installed a mono Klark Technik graphic EQ into the racks of Spirit Studio

Charlie Jones Live Venue
  • An Apple iPad is now available to sign out from reception. This has various applications installed to allow control of the D-Show, M32, X32 and FoH amplifiers remotely

Ghost Studio 2

  • We’ve changed the layout of Ghost Studio 2 by rotating the furniture and equipment 90 degrees anti-clockwise
  • This allows us to position the iMac above the meter bridge again and it not inhibit the view to the live room or projector screen
  • We’ve replaced the class chairs with new black and chrome chairs now found in many of our other studios
