SSR Success Story - Ashley Read, Game Audio Developer

Ashley Read

Game Audio Developer

Sound Engineering & Design BSc (Hons)

Ashley Read studied on our BSc (Hons) Sound Engineering and Design course, run in conjunction with the University of Bolton. Since finishing his studies Ashley has been inundated with work for some of the industries key players in the games development industry.

Upon completion of his studies at SSR Ashley worked for a gaming company called Dark Energy Digital, assisting the development of combat game Hydrophobia, World Championship Snooker, and Pool Nation.
Following the closure of Dark Energy Ashley landed a role at TT Fusion, working on Lego: Lord of the Rings, Spyhunter and Lego City: Undercover. His responsibilities at TT included sound design, Foley, mixing cut scenes as well as whole games, product assessment, audio implementation and audio archive management; roles he feels he wouldn’t have been able to fulfil successfully without the skills and knowledge he developed during his studies at SSR.

Recently, Ashley secured his highest profile role to date when he landed a contract with Reflections, a Ubisoft studio based in Newcastle. Ashley is a member of the audio team developing one of the years most anticipated games Watch_Dogs, working under the direction of Peter Connelly, legendary composer for the Tomb Raider games.

Ashley Read:
“The sound engineering and design course was exactly what I needed to prepare for and kick start my career in game audio. The diverse selection of modules and assignments greatly increased my understanding of audio techniques and applications across a wide spectrum of roles, from sound design and composition to audio restoration and mastering. I was able to use the knowledge I gained to become very flexible in my job, which is vital for working in games. Every day you encounter a different challenge and thanks to SSR I am able to deal with them efficiently and to a high standard. I’d like to thank SSR’s lecturers for sharing their audio production techniques as well as being great mentors who helped me every step of the way. Also a very special thanks to Norbert Weiher for teaching me how to mix and edit post production projects quickly to broadcast standard.”

Alongside his work for Reflections, Ashley also owns his own sound production company called Blue Mop Audio.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ashley on his career so far and wish him every success for the future.
