DJ & Promoter
Ricky Meakin joined SSR’s DJ Academy in 2005 and drawing on the inspiration that the course provided, Ricky and his former partner formed a DJ duo called The Sundefunkerz. In addition to this, they started their own Sunday party in Derby called Sundefunk. This subsequently gave the pair a platform to launch their act onto the local party scene. After a string of successful events, the boys embarked on a brave trip to Marbella to pursue new horizons, this marked the birth of Lovebug. Lovebug began to create a buzz in the resort and they were quickly approached yet again to operate fortnightly at TIBV Discotec playing to a 2000 strong audience.
With a huge degree of success Lovebug has helped to break new talent whilst maintaining a high quality rotation of established acts over the years including; Yousef (Space Ibiza) M.Y.N.C Project (Cr2 Records), Kate Lawler (Sankeys Resident), Brandon Block (Ibiza legend), Darius Syrossian (Vivia Music World), Jon Woodall (backtobasics), Scott Lorimer (blend), Fran Cosgrave, Tony Haze (we love Sundays at Space), Funkjunkies (Gatecrasher residents), and many more.
The night has naturally evolved from its more commercial house roots and is now driven by underground house. In light of this shift, a booking from Steve Lawler’s Viva Music agency Darius Syrossian was a recent highlight of the Lovebug calendar. Again another turn of fate and a phone call from Darius after his gig lead Ricky and his team to being offered a slot in the Black Box to launch their long anticipated website launch party at the mighty Back to Basics in Leeds... On Friday 20th May the infamous lovebug party was about to achieve the almost unachievable, a mark of house music history with a party to celebrate 5 years of underground house music with Cicuss and Space Ibiza resident Yousef headlining. This prompted a phone call from Mixmag to be featured in there big 3 events in the UK.
“After many years of hearing great things about some of the courses that are ran at SSR in Manchester there was one particular program that caught our eye, me and a friend of mine had already been DJ’ing for some years but felt we needed some invaluable experience and training on the events side of things in terms of putting our own nights on & creating a brand in order for us to get ahead of the rest, it was inevitable that we got ourselves to Manchester to enroll.
Their 6 month program was packed full of lectures, demonstrations, group exercises, mix sessions and one to one’s with the instructors who are among some of the best in the industry, we took all the training and just ran with it.
Fast forward 6 years and we are now fully established with previous nights all over the UK and in Ibiza at leading venues like Ministry Of Sound, Gatecrasher, & Back TO Basics, not to mention our launch in Marbella fresh out of the academy at SSR 5 years ago.
They really encourage you and allow you to get creative and guide you to put on that perfect club night which is assessed at the end of the course. We are now planning our 6th Birthday in London and have a new monthly residency in Shoreditch, East London, which is causing quite a stir; we have no intentions of slowing down either…. The night is still driven by giving new dj’s a stage to perform on and we are always very keen to here from new Dj’s wanting to get involved as we know how hard it is to break through.
It’s all thanks to the team at SSR, so we would just like to say a big THANK YOU! And anyone thinking of getting ahead of the rest then the course is a MUST!”
